This scene is off the M2 Highway running alongside the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newtown Downtown Jhb. I love the titillating blur of the Police Van set against the still skyline of downtown Joburg. That image taking this work to an almost “pop-art” sensation.

The shadows reminiscent of the dark side of the city. I really enjoyed watching this particular piece come to life…

A scene capturing Johannesburg’s Nelson Mandela Bridge, this work reflects the in-betweenness of urban flow, caught between pedestrian movement and vehicular passage, stillness and acceleration. The bridge becomes not only a structure but a metaphor for navigating thresholds, both physical and psychological. This painting captures the striking geometry and atmospheric depth of Johannesburg’s iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge, rendered with photorealistic precision. The composition places the viewer directly within the lane of urban transition, cars moving forward, pedestrians walking along the edge, and the looming city skyline unfolding in the distance. Jozi–06 is both a tribute to contemporary city life and an exploration of spatial rhythm, movement, and human presence in the built environment. The work subtly reflects the layered rhythm of city life, caught between pause and propulsion, where memories reside in motion and identity is sculpted by routine routes.

This is the Famous Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City, Johannesburg, South Africa. The work was commissioned by Liberty Property through The Gallery On The Square. I am very honoured to have been part of this project and to be given the most attractive of all their properties to do. The Square is the hub of the Johannesburg "Urban Jungle". It draws thousands of tourists each year to glimpse the famous statue of Nelson Mandela which was erected in March 2004 in honour of this powerful/inspirational South African Figure. The statue was sculpted by Kobus Hatting- www.kobushattingh.co.za

Circulism

Circulism is a technique that many artists use in attaining a realistic skin texture in drawing. Circulism is basically drawing very tiny overlapping and intertwining circles. The circles do not have to be perfect to achieve this effect.

It is a very time consuming exercise but with truly amazing effects. Especially when trying to portray skin in an portrait. Which is not always flawless…
